Because we install and repair plumbing fixtures on a daily basis, we’ve developed a strong sense of what lasts and what doesn’t. Based on our experience, we recommend brands that are consistently reliable and easy to maintain or repair when needed.
While these are our preferred fixture manufacturers, there are a long list of other options available. If you select fixtures from other brands, be sure to read customer reviews and make sure they work and last as intended.
- American Standard
Plumbing fixtures are a crucial part of our daily routines, so we notice when their quality or reliability is lacking. And while choosing the right brand can make a big difference, it’s also important to be sure you’re getting the best quality fixtures from that brand.
This is important, because plumbing fixtures are not all made to the same quality. Even fixtures with the same model number.
Plumbers across the country have confirmed this: plumbing fixtures purchased from Home Depot, Lowes and other home improvement chains are made with lower-quality materials when compared with fixtures from a plumbing supplier.
So while the faucet we quoted may be cheaper at the local home improvement warehouse, it’s because the manufacturer substituted plastic parts for the more durable metals that keep the fixture working longer.
Setting A Budget
When you’re budgeting for plumbing fixtures, keep these costs in mind:
- The cost of the fixture itself
- Maintenance costs
- Replacing or retrofitting old drains, water lines, and shutoff valves
- Sheetrock repair and painting
Replacing a broken plumbing fixture or upgrading fixtures in your kitchen? Here are a few things to keep in mind in the process.
Kitchen faucets come in a variety of materials and styles. While choosing your next kitchen faucet, you should also consider these options:
- Pull out faucet
- Touchless technology
- Rate of flow
- Filtration system
- Your sink configuration
If your disposal is struggling to keep up, it may be time to upgrade. Replacing the disposal with a newer or more powerful model can improve performance, but don’t forget to keep your drains clean and avoid putting these foods in your garbage disposal.
You probably don’t normally think of the dishwasher as a plumbing appliance, but it’s also an important part of the water use in your kitchen.
The feature set of your dishwasher can vary widely, so be sure to make a list of your needs (and nice-to-haves) before you pick out your next one.
Upgrading your bathroom fixtures can be a big improvement. Here are a few factors to consider in your search for the perfect bath experience.
Like their kitchen counterparts, bathroom faucets come in a wide variety of styles and materials. Be sure to consider the decor of the bathroom, and don’t be afraid to change it up from room to room.
Of all the fixture selections you will make in your home, the shower head may be the most important. Personal preferences vary, so take the time to understand what type of shower you prefer.
Features to consider when choosing a shower head:
- Flexible neck
- Adjustable arm
- Handheld wand
- Spray selector
- Low flow
Tub faucets range from utilitarian to luxurious, in both style and price.
When selecting your tub faucet it’s common to match the style of the lavatory faucet, toilet paper and towel holders, and any other trim in the room.
Also, be sure the tub faucet is correctly designed to fit the tub. Some tubs will only work with single handle, two-handle or three-handle faucets, while others work with multiple faucet styles.
Today, brands like Toto and Kohler offer toilets with an incredible list of features, including remotes, heated seats, and remotes
While these advanced features can be attractive, remember that additional features can mean higher maintenance costs.
At the end of the day, it’s your throne. Make sure you’ll be comfortable on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
While you certainly can purchase your own plumbing fixtures, we don’t recommend it if quality and warranty are important to you. Most fixtures available through big-box retailers like Home Depot or Lowes are inferior quality. We’ve compared the same model from a plumbing supplier and a big-box retailer, and noticed a significant difference in the materials and manufacturing quality.
If you do choose to purchase your own fixtures we’re happy to install them for you, but we can’t warranty fixtures purchased from a third party.

We recommend hiring a licensed, bonded and insured plumber to install plumbing fixtures.
By hiring a licensed plumber, you gain peace of mind. A specialty plumbing contractor in Washington State is required to carry a bond and insurance to cover any potential damage caused by their work. A professional handyman will be licensed and insured, but because they don’t have a plumbing license their work – and your home – may not be covered by their insurance policy.
While a simple faucet change-out or shower head installation may seem like a small project, the potential for leaks is high and the damage they can cause can be catastrophic. Hiring a professional plumber can give you the peace of mind that the job is done right, and in addition if something does go wrong you will be covered by insurance.
That’s your choice. DIY plumbing projects are one way to save money in your home, and while we don’t recommend going it alone on every project, in some circumstances a fixture can be replaced by a homeowner.
That being said, a professional plumbing fixture installation can save you time, help avoid possible water damage from an incorrectly-installed fixture, and comes with a warranty. If these are important to you, we recommend scheduling an appointment for one of our service professionals to replace the fixture.
